Montmartre - Le Sacre-Coeur
In the fifty years from 1890 to 1940, it was at one time or another home to : Modigliani, Utrillo, Valadon, Picasso and Braque. Sight abound : the Place du Tertre, heart of the old village and magnet for painters and portrait artists; the Sacré-Coeur, a vast basilica; the Rue Lepic where Theo and Vincent Van Gogh once lived. Le Sacre-Coeur
The name means 'Martyrs' Hill' because of the martyrdom of Saint Denis. In 1534 here was founded 'la Compagnie de Jésus' (Jésuites). Unitl the french revolution, a large abbey looked down on the hill. It was distroyed as the most Parisian churches. In 1873, the Cardinal Guibert got the permission from the 'Assemblée Nationale' to bild a new Basilica on the famous hill, which we can visit today.
